Here’s a thoroughly depressing though informative graphic. See the original article for an interactive graphic and more information.
Republican dominated state legislatures have run roughshod over Roe v. Wade in the last two years with their knee-jerk, post Obama elected, teapublican majorities (also, can we get this gerrymandering under control please?). I sincerely hope that someone can bring a lawsuit to the Supreme Court to counter these laws as it should recognize that according to Planned Parenthood v. Casey:
“To protect the central right recognized by Roe while at the same time accommodating the State’s profound interest in potential life, see, id., at 162, the undue burden standard should be employed. An undue burden exists, and therefore a provision of law is invalid, if its purpose or effect is to place substantial obstacles in the path of a woman seeking an abortion before the fetus attains viability.”
Clearly, most of these laws cause an “undue burden” and place “substantial obstacles” in the way of women by delaying abortions unnecessarily, reducing care availability, causing financial hardship, and/or causing emotional hardship. So go get em ACLU! If only I had donated more. 😦
